The
Five - Twenty-Five Plan - Outcome B (K-3)-6
Take advantage of using
a little activity to open the discussion about how activity makes
a person feel, the importance and advantages of keeping fit.
Plan a series of 30-minute
lessons using the "5-20-5" plan.
Start
with a five minute warmup that
includes stretching - remember to stretch after muscles have been
warmed; walk or play an activity that is not too demanding. Try Walking
Tag (typical tag game, but no running, only walking) or place stations
of equipment in the gymnasium and allow students to choose their own
station.
Then
for 20 minutes play games that have students huffing and puffing,
but also stretching and using muscular strength. Here is a game you
can try or modify:
Crab tag
Have the students walk with hands and feet on the floor, body facing
upward, and try to tag each other using only their hands (no feet
kicking in the head!) Every student is "it". Once one student tags
another, the "tagee" must do 5 jumps before coming back into the
game in the crabwalk position. They get a 3-second grace period
before they can be tagged again.
Have
the students pretend they are seals and drag themselves around
the floor using only their hands. (Great for upper body strength!)
|
For
the last five minutes, do a cool
down. Make sure all the students are breathing normally and
have a resting heart rate before starting to stretch.
This second stretching session can be more involved now that the
students' muscles are really warm.
|
After
the stretching is done, gather the class into a circle and discuss
how the students felt. Was it fun to be active? Did they enjoy
getting stronger? Discuss the importance of keeping active to
stay strong and alert. |
