Positive Interaction Self-challenges

Decide with your teacher which of these activities to complete:

  1. Decide how these "Five Principles of Fair Play" can be applied in alternative environment activities:

    Five Principles of Fair Play
    1. Respect yourself and others
    2. Respect the rules
    3. Respect the people who enforce rules
    4. Include everyone
    5. Maintain self-control at all times

  2. What really ticks you off when you are at a crowded pool or beach on a hot summer afternoon? How can the Five Principles of Fair Play be related to these instances?
  3. Invent a game using at least one object (ball, pool noodle, floating mat). Try to have at least one other person involved. The game must be able to be played for at least 10 minutes of a 30 minute activity session. Identify a challenge that must be overcome as part of the strategy of the game to ensure everyone is involved. The focus with this activity is on cooperation. This activity can help you to achieve other general outcomes as well.
  4. Demonstrate leadership by taking a group of friends or family on an outing involving wall-climbing, mountain biking, rollerblading, hiking or other AE activities. Ensure that as the leader you also have someone responsible at the end of the group to help participants who may be slower.
  5. If you live in the country or have access to a farm, what activities do you do on a regular basis that take you into the great outdoors? For example, chasing the cows in from the pasture with your friend requires cooperation and improves your cardiovascular fitness. Hauling bales and working together to stack them improves your muscular strength. Provide some of your own examples and explain how you can work together with someone. What aspect of fitness, or what skills, are you learning? Can you improve your fitness level by participating in these activities more often? For a longer duration?
  1. Look at the list of alternative environment activities. See if you can work with a friend or family member to come up with a plan to get three or more people involved in one of these activities. Can you all go for a ski? How about a skate? Work out the details so you are all involved in the process of planning. Maybe one can work on transportation while others work on food, or on generating the list of necessary equipment.
