Cooperative Baseball - Outcome A (4-6)-11

Students are divided into two teams – one team is the batting/kicking team and the other team is in the field. The team in the field selects a pitcher and the rest of the team scatters around the playing field. There are no bases so students do not have to be at specific bases, and they do not need a back catcher.

How to Play

• The pitcher throws the ball, and the first "batter" at the plate kicks it out towards the field.
  
• Instead of proceeding around the bases, the batter runs around the rest of the batting/kicking team, who are standing in a close line off to the side of the batting area.
• Each time the batter runs around the front person in the line, a run is scored.
• To stop the number of runs being scored, the team in the outfield has to obtain the ball, line up behind one another starting with whoever stops the ball, and pass the ball over/under to each of the teammates. Everyone, including the pitcher, must be included in the over/under action.
• When the last person is holding the ball, they yell "stop" and the batter stops running.
• Continue to go through the batting order until everyone has had a turn, or until three pop-flies have been caught (two pop-flies for a large class.) Then switch the teams at bat with the fielders.

Break the class into smaller groups to maximize playing time by having two games played simultaneously.

Use an extension such as a paddle to hit a baseball sized foam ball instead of kicking a ball. A wiffle ball and plastic bat also work well.
