Happy Trails - Outcome A (4-6)-7

Students participate in an extended hike through a nearby ravine or trail.

Students help plan for:

  • Hot, cold, or rainy weather (bring a hat, sunscreen, extra clothing)
  • Water to replenish liquids
  • Suitable snack that is light and does not require preparation
  • Appropriate footwear for the hike
  • Rest stops along hike.

Teachers should ensure that there are first-aid procedures in place and that a first-aid kit is available, as well as a cell phone, if within range.

Start with a regular walk around the school field or school property. Try to incorporate hills and different terrain if possible. On the hike, see if students can identify objects from A - Z along the route. Record these along the way using recipe cards, or use the PDF file provided.

Happy Trails

For example:
A = apple tree
B = berries
C = cranberries.

Incorporate orienteering into the hike.

Incorporate other curricula such as science or language arts into the hike.

Have students wear an old sock over their shoe on the hike. Take a walk through a field during the fall. Upon returning to the school, carefully remove the socks and plant them to see what will grow.

Take bikes instead of walking.

Encourage students to bring a parent along for the hike.

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...
