Aerobics Routines - Outcome A (7-9)-13

After becoming familiar with the components of aerobic routines (through videos, school lessons, or community lessons), students will form groups of four to six and create an aerobics routine to teach to their peers.

Assign each group an activity portion of the routine (e.g., warmup and stretching, cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, cool down). Give the students one to two classes to refine their activity-specific skills, choose appropriate music, and choreograph the routine. (For example, Group C is doing muscular strength and endurance and chooses to do variations of sit-ups and push-ups to a top-40 dance song.)

On presentation day, each group presents their routine in the pre-determined order and the class follows along.

The routine should last at least one song length. In order to stretch out the cardiovascular portion of the routines (and to maintain the heart rate for more than 15 minutes), assign three or four groups to that component.

Ask community fitness leaders to assist the students in developing the routines.

Use the routine in a classroom setting when other classes are using the gymnasium.

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...

Students can identify the components of functional fitness and connect activities to reach these components.

Students can present their routine with few breaks in movement.
